Camerata Nova Sings Praetorius – Sackbuts and Crumhorns and Shawms – Oh My!
My friend, Ross Brownlee, will lead Camerata Nova and a host of guests in a performance of Praetorius’ Lutheran Mass for Christmas Morning this weekend and I have the honour and good fortune to be recording the concerts. This definitely is not your garden variety shopping mall Christmas music. As this will be Ross’ swan song with Camerata Nova, he has pulled out all the stops, so to speak. This is Christmas music on a grand scale which will feature the accomplished Camerata Nova and supported by string players from the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and ancient instrument players (the instruments – not the players) from across the continent, as well as added voices from alumni of Camerata Nova and from Westgate Collegiate. Add to that the grand pipe organ of Westminster United Church and you have an idea of what to expect – Christmas the way they used to do it in the 17th century!
The concerts are at Westminster United Church, 745 Westminster Avenue. The performances are Saturday Nov. 21 at 8:00 pm and Sunday Nov. 22 at 3:00 pm. Check here for tickets details.
And in case you were wondering what sackbuts, crumhorns, and shawms are, check out this list of what will be on stage. See you there.
